Kolkata: Both Kolkata Police and Bengal Police have received around 20 complaints about inflammatory posts on social media following the
Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Sources said at least seven of them are in the process of being turned into FIRs after consultation with their respective legal cells.
At least two organisations, one associated with the Matua community and another formed during the RG Kar protests, lodged complaints about a particular "offensive" clip.
"We are monitoring posts and videos that might be causing tension among communities, inciting hatred, and destabilising India's social fabric. Another part we are monitoring is the use of provocative language to trigger fear and division during a sensitive time," said an officer.
Cops said fake accounts of reputable news outlets were being created to spread unverified claims, sometimes using AI. One apparently sho-ws a world leader making con-troversial comments on the present Indian situation. "It is a fake video," said an officer.
"We received complaints from media houses and a number of forwards from citizens. The VoIP addresses are being traced. AI is being used to change original videos," said an officer.." According to an officer from the Kolkata Police's cyber division, hashtags are being used to ensure the rapid spread of these fake posts.
Additionally, 25 accounts from UP, MP, and Rajasthan have been identified, and the owners summoned. Lalbazar has also detected a hint of "outsider involvement" in spreading these rumours.
